Community Spotlight: Wrecktko

Discover Wrecktko's Insider Secrets to Effectively Promote Your Fortnite Creative Game!
I had the pleasure of interviewing Wrecktko, a dedicated Fortnite Creative game creator who took the time to share his unique strategies and experiences about marketing and promotion in Fortnite Creative. As a full-time remote worker, he has ample time to explore the creative landscape of Fortnite, and his passion for game design has only grown stronger since he started helping a friend with map creation.

Meet Wrecktko!
Wrecktko is a devoted creator with a knack for designing engaging Fortnite maps. Thanks to the guidance of his friend, he quickly got the hang of using various props and devices for his creations. You can connect with him on YouTube : wrecktkogaming, TikTok - @wrecktko, and Discord (@Wrecktko).
How do you begin planning your marketing strategy for a new Fortnite game?
I mainly use what I have, which is a LOT of friends. Before I publish I bring around 15-20 people into my map, test it out for a few. Once I publish, we do that again for a day or 2 to test bugs out, and this seems to help put the map on Discovered. I've done this for my 2 maps, and the one I help my friend on which is already on Browse under RP. Also, I use FCHQ to promote as I compete for Featured Fridays. I've won before as well!
What channels (social media, forums, websites, etc.) have you found most effective for promoting your games?
In-game promoting has worked the best for me, but aside from that I use YouTube and TikTok a lot.
Can you share a specific marketing technique that has yielded significant results for you?
Honestly, that would be using my friends list. I'll join my fresh lobby, leave my game on open join and the flood gates open.
How important has your community been in promoting your games? What role do they play in your marketing strategy?
I normally do everything alone, however I do have some close friends who join my lobbies to get them full, which helps keeps my map on Discovery.
How do you use visuals (screenshots, trailers, etc.) in your marketing efforts? Can you share an example where this was particularly successful?
I tend to always record on OBS. Then I'll upload onto YouTube, this is somewhat good, but my best strategy as mentioned is my friend list. I have a lot of friends, as I'm a popular player in the RP community.
Can you share an instance where player feedback or community sentiment influenced your marketing approach?
People always tell me that seeing an actual creator actively in their game, helps bring people in. Especially since I join to give out free items and gold.
What role has influencer marketing (streamers, YouTubers, etc.) played in your promotional strategies?
I've noticed map owners do not normally play in their maps with there people, so that where I'm different.
Have you collaborated with other creators for cross-promotion? If yes, how did you approach it and what were the outcomes?
Yes for GANGSTA CITY RP. I've done YouTube tutorials for them and they've been successful.
How do you measure the success of your marketing efforts? What metrics do you focus on?
Considering that I have 2 maps on discovery, the efforts are great!
What is one common marketing mistake you believe new Fortnite creators should avoid?
Not entering their own maps, and using their popularity. You would be surprised how quick lobbies can get filled if the owner is inside of the game.
Can you share your thoughts on paid promotions or ads? Have you used them, and if so, what was your experience?
I haven't used any paid ads, have not needed to do it.
How do you keep up with changes in marketing trends, especially in the gaming industry?
I tend to check other maps, and give people what they want, which other maps miss. I have another large open world pvp map that has a 1v1 build arena inside, so when someone calls someone else out to fight, they can simply go there. I try to think outside the box and add things not in the games they play.
What could Epic do to make it easier for Fortnite Creators to Market their work?
Make it easier to enter a Browse section. Some maps do not have any players and enter browse. Mine has 12k+ players and is only on discovery so far.
Do you find it hard to market your map, if it never appears on Discovery? If so, why?
No, its not hard to put it on Discovery.
You are 4 months into Creative, do you find it challenging to compete against creators and large studios who have a massive player base?
No, I make maps people enjoy. If they play it, amazing, if not I'll keep thinking on what to make that can draw players.
Lastly, could you share one key piece of advice for new Fortnite creators looking to effectively market their games
Yes, play your game, hang with the people. Players love seeing map creators in their own game. This attracts more players to come.
Advice for New Creators
Throughout my interview with Wrecktko, you will see a common theme: Engage with your community. Not only does he rely on his friends for initial testing and promotion, but he also maintains a strong presence in his games, giving out items and engaging with players. This approach humanizes the game experience and draws in more players.
The Key Takeaway
The key takeaway here is to be present and active in your games. Engage with your community, listen to their feedback, and don't forget to explore other platforms for promotion. I think we can learn a lot from Wrecktko's experiences as you strive to effectively market your own games.
