Epic Games has announced an important update that will impact creators working with UEFN islands. In the upcoming 27.10 update, they will be introducing new editor restrictions specifically targeting textures used in these islands.
Texture Restrictions The update will restrict the use of unoptimized textures that have been causing instability and poor performance in UEFN islands. After the update, it will be necessary to remove or update any restricted textures before you can republish your island.
Affected Textures The restriction primarily affects textures that do not conform to standard sizes. Specifically, textures must now have dimensions that are a power of two (e.g., 256x256, 512x512), except for those in the “UI” group.
Checking and Fixing Textures: Creators are advised to check their projects for any restricted textures prior to publishing post-update. Epic Games provides detailed instructions for identifying and fixing affected assets, involving steps such as using the Content Drawer or Content Browser and running specific queries.
There are two methods for updating affected textures:
Option A: Allows for automatic correction of textures by the editor, which might result in some unnecessary memory usage.
Option B: Involves manual resizing and re-uploading of textures to optimize memory usage.
This update is part of Epic Games' ongoing efforts to enhance performance and stability for creators and players alike. All creators are encouraged to review their projects and make necessary adjustments in accordance with these new guidelines.
