EPIC GAMES AMA RECAP: PROGRAMMING & SCRIPTING
An engaging AMA took place today, May 24, 2023, with Epic Games. Several Epic staff members, including Conan Reis and Ray Benefield, interacted with a creative audience, providing fascinating insights into programming, scripting, game development, and shared some behind-the-scenes stories.
A plethora of questions were asked with answered by the team, touching upon an array of topics that sparked insightful discussions. For the full summary of questions and answers, click here.
Conan Reis (@ConanReis) intrigued participants with his amazing "mad scientist" story that captivated the audience. The details, however, can only be viewed here!
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COMMUNITY
When MBroNetwork asked about the creation of Verse instead of using established programming languages like Lua, JavaScript, or C++, Reis explained that Verse was specially designed to run within Fortnite on all its platforms, focusing on the Metaverse's massive scalability and ensuring stability, security, and backwards compatibility. The language also had to take advantage of the fact that it was for simulations, operating in conjunction with world editors and associated tools. Verse Language Reference was shared for more details.
WERTANDREW Meanwhile, Wertandrew was curious about plans to directly inject code while a sequencer is running. Reis responded that they were currently considering several mechanisms to integrate Verse into the sequencer but were unable to provide a timeline.
DRAGON Dragon asked if there was a vision for Verse to morph into a visual scripting system, similar to UE blueprints. Reis acknowledged that the idea of toggling between a textual and visual representation of Verse was compelling, and while Epic was experimenting with graphically visualizing Verse, they weren't certain if they would proceed in that direction.
K-MUS Rodney Houle (@rodneyhoule) also took part in the AMA, answering questions about the Verse API. In response to K-MUS's question about providing getters for any property of an object in UEFN, Houle encouraged creators to share any Verse API features they felt were missing to help the team prioritize.
VALUABLE CAREER TIPS SHARED Ray Benefield (@RayBenefield) shared valuable tips on starting a career in game development, inspiring many of the attendees. His insights and advice were well-received and highly appreciated by the audience.
