Memory Overload? No Problem!

MEMORY OVERLOAD? NO PROBLEM!
Let's check out some strategies you can use to overcome memory obstacles!
Finding yourself over budget on memory while crafting your Fortnite Creative game can feel like hitting an unexpected roadblock. However, there's no need for panic. There are several strategies you can adopt to save on memory and keep your game running smoothly.
1. Conduct a Memory Audit
Start by flying through your island and keep an eye on the thermometer. As it reaches critical memory limits, consider deleting some actors. This step can help you identify and reduce unnecessary memory consumption.
2. Streamline Your World
If you haven't already, turn on streaming in the World Partition panel. It's a must for larger islands, but even smaller ones can benefit when the content becomes too dense. Streaming ensures that only the necessary parts of your island are loaded at any given time, significantly cutting down memory use.
3. Limit Your Devices
Creative devices can be memory hogs as they aren't streamed out. They'll add to the memory of whatever cell the character is located in. Reducing the number of devices your island uses can make a notable difference.
4. Check Your Project Size
The Project Size window provides a snapshot of your memory usage. Memory-heavy objects on disk usually translate to heavy memory usage at runtime. You can access this window by clicking the Project dropdown and selecting Project Size.
5. Optimize Your LODs
If you're using custom asset Level of Details (LODs), consider reducing their quality level, especially for assets visible only from a distance. This tactic can help you save on memory without compromising the gaming experience.
6. Reuse Your Assets
Get creative with asset usage. For instance, if you're creating a forest with 100 trees, use 5 variations and duplicate them instead of using 100 unique trees. This approach can significantly reduce your memory footprint while maintaining visual diversity.
7. Harness the Power of HLODs
Hierarchical Level of Details (HLODs) can be your ally in memory management. Generate them throughout your project, focusing on objects visible from afar. This technique can considerably optimize your memory usage.
Exceeding your memory budget can seem daunting, but it's a manageable challenge. By conducting a memory audit, streamlining your world, limiting devices, checking your project size, optimizing LODs, reusing assets, and harnessing HLODs, you can keep your game island running smoothly without compromising on quality. Game development is a journey filled with hurdles, but each one is an opportunity for learning and growth. So, keep creating, keep optimizing, and most importantly, keep having fun!
Happy Creating!
