Today has been nothing short of amazing! With the release of UEFN, comes a new creator economy program that no one expected but everyone deserved! During the UEFN reveal at GDC 2023 today, Sax Peterson with Epic Games stated - "Fortnite is becoming an economy", and he was not joking! The new economy program, which is called the Engagement Payout Program or EPP for short, is a program that pays out based on player engagement.
Great question! Think of EPP like a loot pool. Epic states they will be contributing 40% of earnings from Fortniteβs Item Shop and related real-money purchases into this loot pool to share with creators who are are active members of the program! What's great about it is - instead of waiting 45 days for a pay out, active EPP creators only have to wait 30 days to receive a payout from all eligible islands, including independent creators' islands, and Epic's own islands like Battle Royale! If you think about how much Fortnite generates yearly, that's a pretty big amount.
In addition to this, Fortnite Game Developers who are a part of EPP have the opportunity to earn more because they are still able to advertise(using socials) their creator codes to be used in the item shop! Definitely a plus!

A lot of creator have expressed concerns over whether a not they will be able to participate in the program. Epic has stated that the program will only be available for legal entities like companies, and for island creators 18 years of age or older, whose Fortnite accounts are at least 90 days old. If you currently have a SAC code, you will still be able to publish your map and earn through your creator code, however you will not be eligible to earn with the Engagement Payout Program, or EPP at this time. There is some hopeful news as this is not a definite. Epic states that they ae working on expanding this program to younger developers sometime in the future!
The Engagement Payout Program promises to be one of the most innovative changes to the Fortnite economic system to date and I am excited to see where this could lead the creative economy in the future! How about you?
